Started as a project at IIT Delhi due to death of students in a road-accident, IRSC has gradually grown to be the largest youth-led organization in India. IRSC currently works across Policy, Law, Medical, Awareness, Technical domains in its efforts to attack the problem of 1.5 lakhs lives being lost from all ends across 50+ cities with volunteer support of more than 40,000+ students from 500+ colleges.
The Safer India Challenge'19 is a 9 month long championship held annually, with the aim to reduce the deaths caused due to road accidents to half by 2020. It is an initiative of Indian Road Safety Campaign and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways held for colleges all across India.
iSAFE aims to spread awareness among the youth and at the same time make use of them as a resource to create awareness among the nation.
The Championship is Bifurcated for Schools and Colleges separately.
iSafe intends to use the expertise of the students, in which they are pursuing their graduation to bridge the gaps present in road-safety and move towards a safer India and also inculcate good road-safety knowledge among school going children.
Need for iSafe'19
As per the statistics released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, we lost more than 1.5 lakh people due to road-accidents last year with 1 person dying every 4 minutes on the roads. Globally, more than 1 million people lose their lives due to road accidents every year. Of the 1.5 lakh, more than 60% of the deaths is of youth between the age of 15-34 years and everyday, 20 children under the age of 14 die due to road-accidents.
2010-2020 has been declared as the Decade of Action for Road safety by United Nations and road-safety is an important part of the UNDP Sustainable Development Goals. The Government of India is also a signatory to the Brasilia charter which aims to reduce the number of deaths happening due to road accidents by half till 2020.
Hence, we all can see that road-safety is the main focus of the world at the moment in an attempt to reduce the number of deaths happening due to road accidents. To eradicate a problem, we need to make sure we attack the problem at all the ends by working on education, enforcement and engineering.
Therefore, iSafe has been designed in a manner that we would be able to attack the problem at the following ends:
Technology and Innovation
